morning. kathy park is live in northwest with community reaction. we begin with lisa baden and the traffic impact. >> there are some parking garages that will be closed. metrorail is closed at mount vernon square station until wednesday at 5:00 a.m. we have a lot of police stationed in front of the hotels and at embassie folks will be heading to meetings for the nuclear summit. traffic heading into the district is time of morning, we will see what develops. let's go to kathy park for the latest. >> a good idea to avoid the area near the washington convention center. this is why. look behind me. police are standing by. trucks are in place. this portion of k street is closed. that's one example of what you will see today and tomorrow.

the barricades are up. the areas surrounding the washington convention center on high alert for the two-day nuclear security summit. there will be parking restrictions and just the start of major traffic tieups, as well as the taurus. >> i don't like it. it does not look very democratic. >> more than 40 world leaders expected to meet under one roof, officials say security will be similar to what we saw during the inauguration. >> people have become accustomed to a certain level of competing on their lives for the sake of security. >> many residents are not accustomed to the checkpoints or steel walls in front of their yards. >> there will be road closures and we will need id to get into our own homes. with mount vernon metro stop closed through wednesday morning, commuters are wondering how to get to work. >> i don't know what people will do who millie rely on public transit around here.

-- who normally rely on public transit. >> if you need to go to work today, remember to have your id and also to get back home. be prepared for additional screenings as well. kathy park reporting. >> now some additional details regarding a major disruption caused by this summit. the post office on k street northwest will be closed today and tomorrow. there will be no mail delivery on certain streets and all the limit service on others. federal agencies will be open as normal. however, federal employees working in downtown d.c. are encouraged to take leave, to telecommute, or work at an alternate site for the next two days. stay with us on abc 7 to help you get around the gridlock. in a few minutes we look at the details of the security summit and how the president plans to keep nuclear weapons away from terrorists. >> a teenager charged in the

shooting that set off a chain of retaliatory violence in southeast d.c. will be back in court today. if 19-year-old carter will be back in court for the continuation of his preliminary hearing. he's charged in the case of the shooting of jordan howe. days later and his brother is charged in an opening fire on a group of people at the funeral. >> police are looking into a case of bodies found at 10:00 there yesterday morning in a high-rise on south reynolds street. the mother is 27-year-old sebie tessema. police are searching for simon asfeha, may be driving a 1999 silver acura with virginia tags xks-1522. >> eastern high school in d.c. will be back open today after a fire that was quickly contained. the school has been undergoing

renovations. students have been attending classes in trailers. there were not impacted by the fire. >> of mechanical problems did not play a role in the weekend plane crash that killed poland owes the president, first lady, and 90 other people. readings from the black boxes indicate there were no technical problems with the plane. russian authorities say the pilot was warned about the weather before the plane crashed on saturday. federal investigators wi andll arrive in west virginia today. people gathered to remember the dead from the worst mine disaster in decades yesterday. high levels of toxic gas have prevented them from recovering all the bodies. another hole will have to be drilled before recovery efforts can continue. >> the virginia governor is urging residents to join a moment of silence.

at 3:30 this afternoon and the west virginia governor is calling for a moment of silence. gov. mcdonnell is coming under fire over a planto require nonviolent felons to submit a personal essay to get their voting rights restored. this comes after the controversy surrounding its confederate history month proclamation. in the meantime, the mississippi gov. haley barbour says it seems like a lot of noise that does not amount to anything. >> the maryland general assembly adjourns at midnight tonight on this final d with several proposals in limbo, including proposals to better track child sex offenders and track child support payments and gambling a prince george's racetrack. another measure would give schools and police new powers to fight gangs. >> 6:06 on this monday morning. we will have highlights from the masters final round, a little

monday morning. there's a breeze out of the north. a fairly comfortable temperatures in the 50's. hai this afternoon near 70. from cal57 in fredericksburg rit now, 52 in leesburg. high-temperature near 70 with plenty of sunshine and a light northerly wind. it will become cloudy by tomorrow. if showers are possible. the seven-day forecast is coming up in a bit. >> in virginia, a minor wreck on 95 northbound on the ramp from 123 woodbridge heading onto the interstate. this will cost you a couple extra minutes if you are on 95. everyone's looking. a roundabout way, they have found a minor crash on the beltway on your way out of sprifield. it's not really blocking anything n. this is the beltway traffic

leaving springfield's heading up to 66 and route 7. no complications reported on 395 inside the beltway. 270, plenty of traffic. this is i-495 at old georgetown road. the flashing light is a rental truck that experience to break our. everything is under control. we still have a very light volume of traffic getting into the district. if you have the option of telecommuting, we encourage you to do so. if 13 metro bus routes will be affected by the closures that are happening in the district. second ed. go to our website wjla.com and type "summit" define the closures and information you need if you travel in or around the district. back to the news desk. >> of today's nuclear summit will mean some of the potentially worst gridlock in our area in years. the metro region is no stranger to the daily grind. the new poll shows more people

are opting out of it. phillip stewart is live in tysons corner to tell us how. this poll comes from the washington post. it shows people feel over the last five years across the region traffic has gotten worse off. that opinion is especially strong in virginia and outside the beltway. close to half of commuters say it dates sit in gridlock or traffic every day or at least several times a week. a solution for this, most people say they would prefer to pay tolls, whether it before and hov lane or a hot over taxes to improve highways. telecommuting would be good today. this poll shows more people doing that. more than a quarter of people are working from home. that is closely associated with your salary. the more people -- the more money people make, the more

likely they are to be able to work from home. if this comes on the heels of a study that was put out last year and that shows in almost every city across the u.s., traffic congestion is easing, except in the dc area. >> i don't see it's gotten worse. i've been h 6ere years. but -- i've been here 6 years, but i drive really early in the morning. >> on a cab driver. -- i am a cab driver. it's getting worse. >> he is a cab driver. he tells us that he sits in a lot of traffic. you can see construction along routes 7 at the beltway in tysons corner. there's a lot of traffic in this area on a normal day.

this construction project behind me has made it even worse in recent weeks. i want to point out a sort of bright spot in this. this poll was done five years ago, a similar one. they found more people said traffic had gotten much worse in that five-year ago poll. at least this time they're not saying it's gotten much worse. people in d.c. are the happiest with their commute. >> that is because they are already there and if not having to get inside. thanks. 6:14 of the time at 57 degrees. >> the cherry blossom festival brought big crowds, but did it bring a lot of money? we will take a closer look. >> leaders from around the globe converge on washington to confront one of the greatest threats to world peace. i will have

news from around road are converging on washington today to address what many feel is the most urgent security issue in the world, how to prevent a devastating nuclear attack. >> the single biggest threat to u.s. security, both short-term, medium-term, long-term, would be the possibility of a terrorist organization obtaining a nuclear weapon. >> on sunday, secretary of state hillary clinton spoke about how the threat from nuclear weapons has changed over the years. >> if the threat of nuclear attack as we grew up with in the cold war has diminished. if the threat of nuclear terrorism has increased. >> president obama hopes to secure all vulnerable nuclear materials withinour years. if intelligence experts believe it may be unrealistic, but necessary. >> half the world has to treat the nuclear threat with a much greater sense of urgency than we have in the last few years. >> the president hopes to convince china to step up pressure on iran over its

>> near 70 by the afternoon. temperatures will slide back tomorrow. if clouds will increase. showers possible by tomorrow evening. looks gorgeous. clear skies today. the wind is out of the north because of a weak front sinking south as we speak. let's show you some other numbers. 57 i boey. 46 in frederick. 54 in leesburg. 55 in marshall, 54 in culpeper. there is a thin line of clouds across the metro area. that is our cold front that will sink southward across the region. that will shift our wind out of the north and eventually the northeast. still mild today with sunshine. if getting cloudtonight. mostly cloudy starting of small morning. if tomorrow afternoon, some showers across the area. showers will be on that front, giving it commute tomorrow evening. into wednesday that will keep us cooler.

starling and doug mcelway. >> we want to go to the telephones. ron anderson from aaa is joining us to talk about what we are going to see today because of the summit. good morning. nice to have you joining us. >> good morning. >> what do you suggest for people who have to get out and about in d.c. today it? >> if you can avoid the area around the convention center, that is the most desirable thing. it's a great day to take a day off if you have time or if you can work from all. we really think traffic downtown has the potential of being one for the record books. it is being compared to the inauguration. the difference was the inauguration was a federal holiday. almost nobody was trying to get to work that day. of course we have our regular work day is the next two days. >> congress is back in session, so that as to the gridlock as

well. i'm curious. maybe this is a harsh assessment, but it seems to me that oftentimes the secre service and various police agencies are tone deaf to the commuting habits of our great city. >> i think that's right. we are not their first priority. commuters are not their priority. their priority is trying to ensure the safety of those at an official function. in this case, the state leaders. when you have a vibrant city like ours with hundreds of thousands of commuters and then you block down so many portions of it, that one area is just the beginning. of course we have motorcades that are going to be going in every direction. i am short that they will have a pretty secure around the white house and all the places where the dignitaries are staying as well as their embassies. so virtually every part of the

it's increasing tomorrow. wednesday will still be gray and cool. warming up on thursday and friday. >> lisa baden will join us in a moment for the traffic gridlock for the nuclear security summit today. but the downtown lockdown is the biggest show of security we have seen since the inauguration. road closures and detours will mean major rabat for anybody try to get in or out of the area. we have live team coverage and kathy park live in northwest with community reaction. but let's get to lisa baden with the traffic impact. >> greenmont commuters will be affected. the mount vernon square station will be closed for metrorail. 13 bus routes and metrus will be affected as well. the d.c. circulator of us will have to change their pattern. if you take a commuter bus, your drop-off and pick-up point make change, so check with your bus driver head of time.

now, we are starting to see more of our neighbors wake up and head into town. interstate 95 in virginia has traffic, 66, 270 southbound. folks are starting to test your stir more around the district. >the officials since last week have warned commuters to avoid the area around washington convention center. this is why. look behind me. this is a portion of k street. there's high police presence. this road is blocked off. several roads around the area are shut down as well. the barricades went up last night. what does all this means for public transportation? the mount vernon metro stop will remain closed until 5:00 a.m. wednesday. several buses have been rerouted. as you might have guessed, this

is very frustrating for commuters as well as residents. we spoke with one gentlemen this morning. he says thate was puzzled getting from one point to another. >> it's very confusing. it's a ball of confusion. i initially thought that with the black iron gates, i thought there would be some openings so that we could get through to the other side of the street. but they had everything barricaded. we cannot go anywhere. just the opposite direction. >> speaking of barricades, the barricades went up as early as friday. of course, with more than 40 dignitaries under one roof, you can understand why security is so tight. residents still needing to get home, you need id. be prepared for additional screenings and for complete list of closures, visit our web

police are looking for simon asfeha, possibly driving a 1999 silver acura or with virginia tags. washington wizard's starke gilbert arenas has started serving his sentence on gun charges. the washington post reports that he has officially entered the montgomery county pre release center. over the next few weeks he will do community service during the day and spends nights at that facility. before entering the facility, he spent two days in the montgomery county detention center. >> eastern high school in northeast will be open today despite yesterday's fire. it broke out on a booth at a construction site. it was quickly contained. if the school has been undergoing renovations, so students have been attending classes in trailers. they were not impacted. >> as poland wants the loss of its president and other leaders, investigators are trying to figure out how the flight with so many dignitaries on board came to such a tragic end.

the traffic situation downtown. >> things are waking up in the district. heating up as well. if you try to get to town, but betty road is a great trip. h street coming through the northeast side is a good trip. nothing through chinatown on h street report coming off benny road. kenilworth avenue out of eastern is a little confusing. coming through the northwest side of town we are in good shape of the roosevelt bridge. coming out of roslyn, the 14th bridge traffic looks pretty good. the third street tunnel is open north and southbound from end to end. keep in mind with rolling road closures and as metropolitan police and secret service are

3-year-old daughter and her mother in an alexandria apartment building. the bodies were found yesterday morning at an apartment complex on south reynolds street. police are searching for simon asfeha. authorities believe it was a case of domestic violence perhaps. >> people in west virginia remembering 25 - who died in the explosion last week -- 29 miners. high levels of toxic gas have prevented them from recovering many of the dead. tiger woods having his first tournament in months. phil mickelson is wearing the green jacket for the third time. it was an emotional victory for him as his wife and mother are battling breast cancer. >> 6:46. lawmakers are back in session after their spring break. but one of the top priorities for democrats is wall street reform. john harris has a closer look.

good to see you. >> good morning. >> how low do they plan to reform wall street? >> the election is not far away. every important issue, including regulation of the financial news tree, will be colored by this calculation. -- financial industry. democrats are willing to split the difference if possible, with republicans. there are other democrats, the senate minority whip dick durbin among them, not happy about the way the bill is emerging. they think it needs to be tougher on wall street, better for consumers. for as far as being bipartisan, if republicans want to stand up for all streets, we will stand up for consumers, they say. either we will get a better bill or we will have a fight in the elections in november. >> there's so much frustration

against wall street, so we dare you to stand up against this this time, they are saying. >> some democrats -- wall street bailout was really unpopular. a lot of democrats say it they're looking for a way to bolster their tough on wall street credentials. >> alan greenspan is testifying before a commission investigating the crash. he said the government bears much of the responsibility for pushing all street to make the sub-prime loans, which led to the toppling of the housing market. >> that's right. his testimony was somewhat controversial. if the city was 70% right hand 30% all. he says that's a pretty good average. other people say it's like driving a 70% without a crash
